Fabric FAQs

No. All of the fabric we work with must meet specific fiber and construction requirements so we’re sure to deliver consistent performance. Before accepting a fabric from our partners mills for processing, samples go through a rigorous testing process in our state-of-the-art lab to ensure these requirements are met. It’s how we achieve the proven performance Crypton is known for.
All Crypton fabrics pass Cal 117, UFAC, and NFPA 260 as a baseline. If more stringent requirements are desired, we are able to process fabrics to meet Cal 133, IMO RES 16-52A, Boston and New York fire codes, automotive FMVSS302, and aviation FAR25-853. These more stringent specifications must be requested at the point of order to be processed accordingly. Ask your distributor for details.
Our expert chemists work to constantly improve Crypton’s formulas, and these efforts have helped us to become industry leaders on the green chemistry front. Here’s just a small glimpse of our efforts in this area of innovation:
  • Crypton has eliminated all PFAS as of October 2022.
  • We avoid the addition of flame retardants unless required by application codes for specific markets, and we have followed the EU’s lead in the elimination of all halogenated flame retardants in instances where flame retardants must be used to meet code.
  • The Silver Ion technology that provides our anti-microbial protection has a lower water solubility than standard formulas, which means lower aquatic toxicity and higher treatability.
No. Crypton is third-party-certified as containing ultra-low or no VOCs. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) can be emitted from products over time into the air, adversely affecting indoor air quality. Crypton technology also does not add formaldehyde to fabrics.
  • It maintains the gold standard performance that has made Crypton a trusted name in the industry.
  • All Crypton fabrics allow for removal of oil-based liquids and stains.
  • Crypton pioneered the industry with trademarked-Zero technology,” which has become a commonly used reference when speaking about fluorine-free fabrics.
  • Our proprietary PFAS-free technology has been available in successful C-Zero fabrics collections since 2018 (Mayer Fabrics, Momentum Textiles, Clek Car Seats).
  • Team of in-house scientists constantly innovating and improving products, calibrating protection based on fiber content and texture for each fabric.
  • 30 years in the performance category.
  • Our proprietary formulation is blended in house in North Carolina.
No, as of October 1, 2022, all production runs of Crypton and Crypton Home Fabrics are manufactured using our PFAS free technology.

No. Because our chemistry is permanently integrated into the fibers themselves, our chemistry will never wear off, but highly-allergic individuals may want to verify use with their doctor. Some Crypton fabrics use acrylic latex in the construction of their moisture barrier, but never rubber latex.
We are proud of the efforts we’ve taken over the years to improve our production efficiencies, which we achieve in a number of ways. We’ve taken measures to reduce water consumption and purchase renewable energy certificates. By streamlining our production line, we have been able to burn less natural gas, reduce CO2 emissions, and reduce electricity consumption. We also strive to close the loop in our industrial processes by recycling 100 percent of our fabric scraps into shoddy, and capturing waste technology to be reused in production.
Yes! We’ve applied our patented “repel and release” technology to outdoor fabrics, home textiles, vinyl, leather, vertical applications, and mattress & bedding.
Crypton has prepared with a multitude of activities to be always on the forefront of sustainability and ever changing regulations.
  • Crypton has implemented the Toxnot (www.toxnot.com) system in 2018 to check all components in our supply chain.
  • The system checks ingredients against all relevant state, federal and international regulatory lists and also most relevant restricted substance lists. The system keeps us updated with ever-changing regulation and it also maintains confidential information to protect our and our supplier’s intellectual property.

Cleaning Product FAQs

Yes. Since Crypton barrier fabrics have demonstrated their ability to repel moisture, the EPA has allowed the disinfectability claim when our Crypton Disinfectant & Deodorizer is used according to directions on the label. This product is also a fabric freshener and deodorizer on all fabrics and is a citrus-scented disinfectant on all other non-porous surfaces.
Only on certain fiber types. Crypton’s “repel and release” stain-fighting technology, coupled with our hospital-grade Disinfectant & Deodorizer, should eliminate the need to subject fabric to the harsh cleaning methods of bleach; however, we know that every facility has its preferred cleaning practices. If the fiber type of your Crypton products are 100% solution-dyed polyester or acrylic, then bleach-cleaning is an option when required. Visit our Cleaning & Care page for further instruction, including acceptable fiber types.

Disinfectant & Deodorizer
They really work! Our cleaners are pH-neutral, water-based, and ready-to-use. They contain no harsh chemicals, no bleach, and no solvents. Crypton Upholstery Cleaners were made to work quickly on stains like iodine; marker; lipstick; food and beverage stains; and protein stains, like blood and grass.
Crypton Upholstery Cleaning Products are versatile. We offer two kinds of stain removers for fabric, a disinfectant and deodorizer, leather and vinyl cleaners and conditioners, an upholstery extraction cleaner concentrate, and an upholstery extraction machine named Ruby. See the Quick-Reference Stain Chart in our Upholstery Cleaning Guide (pdf) to help determine which product to use for spot cleaning. Crypton Upholstery Cleaning Products work on all upholstery, carpets, and wall coverings, but are specifically engineered to clean Crypton Fabrics quickly and easily.
Yes! Our powerful cleaners work on all water-cleanable textiles. Try them and you will be amazed!
Yes. While most new stains come off easily with a damp cloth and water, a mild enzyme detergent, like Tide® or Dawn® dishwashing liquid, mixed with water is a very effective and safe way to clean Crypton. Mix 5 parts water with 1 part enzyme detergent. For more cleaning tips, visit our Cleaning & Care page.
Many cleaners have high alkalinity (soap) levels, and when used on fabric they leave behind a soapy residue that attracts new dirt very quickly.
These are commonly referred to as “quats,” since they are quaternary ammonium compounds. Our latest advancement in disinfectant cleaners has been developed using a new kind of quaternary ammonium chloride structure that offers excellent germicidal properties and excellent cleaning. They offer a tremendous range and versatility for use. Crypton Disinfectant & Deodorizer is easy to use and is effective against a wide range of bacteria, including MRSA and VRE. Crypton quaternary disinfectant is effective on Crypton integrated barrier fabrics.
Antimicrobial agents destroy or inhibit the growth or reproduction of bacteria, fungi, protozoa or viruses that cause disease. Antibacterial means any substance intended to destroy, eliminate, reduce, mitigate or control the growth or development of bacteria on surfaces. Antimicrobial and antibacterial products are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The EPA closely regulates germicidal product claims, particularly where the target germs cause human illness. Since all germ killers are considered pesticides, the EPA requires testing to certify manufacturers’ claims for safety and effectiveness. Crypton Disinfectant & Deodorizer is registered with the EPA.
