Frequently asked questions

No. All of the fabric we work with must meet specific fiber and construction requirements so we’re sure to deliver consistent performance. Before accepting a fabric from our partners mills for processing, samples go through a rigorous testing process in our state-of-the-art lab to ensure these requirements are met. It’s how we achieve the proven performance Crypton is known for.

All Crypton fabrics pass Cal 117, UFAC, and NFPA 260 as a baseline. If more stringent requirements are desired, we are able to process fabrics to meet Cal 133, IMO RES 16-52A, Boston and New York fire codes, automotive FMVSS302, and aviation FAR25-853. These more stringent specifications must be requested at the point of order to be processed accordingly. Ask your distributor for details.

Crypton prohibits the growth of molds, like Aspergillus niger, and bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, E coli, and MRSA, as well as viruses like HIV and Hepatitus. Our fabric process also includes chemistry that prohibits bacteria and mold from spreading.

Our expert chemists work to constantly improve Crypton’s formulas, and these efforts have helped us to become industry leaders on the green chemistry front. Here’s just a small glimpse of our efforts in this area of innovation:

  • Crypton has eliminated all PFOA- and PFOS-containing long-chain C8 chemistry from our fluorinated formulas in favor of C6 chemistry, which is not bio-accumulative or toxic.
  • We avoid the addition of flame retardants unless required by application codes for specific markets, and we have followed the EU’s lead in the elimination of all halogenated flame retardants in instances where flame retardants must be used to meet code.
  • The Silver Ion technology that provides our anti-microbial protection has a lower water solubility than standard formulas, which means lower aquatic toxicity and higher treatability.

No. Crypton is third-party-certified as containing ultra-low or no VOCs. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) can be emitted from products over time into the air, adversely affecting indoor air quality. Crypton technology also does not add formaldehyde to fabrics.

No. PFOS and PFOA are considered persistent organic pollutants (POPs), so Crypton has developed an environmentally preferable C6 chemistry for all of its fabrics that avoids the use of these POPs.

PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) is a by-product that can be found in some stain-resistant products at a level below one part per million. Its risk potential is currently being investigated. As a matter of responsible care, Crypton decided to move toward products that are not made with PFOA and have no detectable level of PFOA.

No. Because our chemistry is permanently integrated into the fibers themselves, our chemistry will never wear off, but highly-allergic individuals may want to verify use with their doctor. Some Crypton fabrics use acrylic latex in the construction of their moisture barrier, but never rubber latex.

We are proud of the efforts we’ve taken over the years to improve our production efficiencies, which we achieve in a number of ways. We’ve taken measures to reduce water consumption and purchase renewable energy certificates. By streamlining our production line, we have been able to burn less natural gas, reduce CO2 emissions, and reduce electricity consumption. We also strive to close the loop in our industrial processes by recycling 100 percent of our fabric scraps into shoddy, and capturing waste technology to be reused in production.

Yes! We’ve applied our patented “repel and release” technology to outdoor fabrics, home textiles, vinyl, leather, vertical applications, and mattress & bedding.

Yes. It is an engineered textile made with pre-tested and approved fabrics with specific fiber and construction requirements to ensure the name Crypton means consistent performance. Approved fibers are permanently transformed with stain and odor protection through an immersion process, plus an impenetrable moisture barrier that protects the fabric from spills.

No. Crypton has been improving its technology for over 20 years. Our new and advanced 2.0 technology does not affect the look or feel of the fabric.

Crypton’s technology is built into all of our fabrics. They are engineered with an integrated backing that will never separate, permanently enhancing the performance of the fabric. In fact, Crypton’s technology is so stable, it has been deemed a solid surface by the EPA. Unlike Crypton fabrics, laminated fabric can delaminate, creating a pocket between the surface fabric and the lining, where moisture can pool, compromising the performance of the fabric and allowing germs to grow.

Yes, the patented barrier formula is vapor-permeable, which keeps Crypton comfortable.

Crypton Outdoor fabric was developed specifically for outdoor use. It has all the features of Crypton PLUS enhanced mold and mildew resistance and UV-resistant fibers, which resist fading for at least 1000 hours.

Crypton is the only fabric that meets or exceeds all of the following heavy duty requirements: stain resistance, water resistance, abrasion, tearing strength, breaking strength, seam slippage, flammability, and resistance to fungal and bacterial growth. Its performance in the hydrostatic resistance test, which measures the ability of a fabric to resist water penetration when water pressure is exerted over its surface, is off the charts!

All Crypton fabrics pass Cal 117, UFAC, and NFPA 260 as a baseline. Yes. Crypton’s exceptional protection from stains, odors, moisture, and mildew makes cleaning a breeze! Liquid spills bead up and can be blotted off with a clean, dry cloth. Most new stains come off with a clean, damp cloth and water. For more stubborn stains, a mild soap and water mixture is very effective.  More cleaning tips are available on our Cleaning & Care page.

Many cleaners have high alkalinity (soap) levels, and when used on fabric they leave behind a soapy residue that attracts new dirt very quickly.

Yes. Since Crypton barrier fabrics have demonstrated their ability to repel moisture, the EPA has allowed the disinfectability claim when our Crypton Disinfectant & Deodorizer is used according to directions on the label. This product is also a fabric freshener and deodorizer on all fabrics and is a citrus-scented disinfectant on all other non-porous surfaces.

Only on certain fiber types. Crypton’s “repel and release” stain-fighting technology, coupled with our hospital-grade Disinfectant & Deodorizer, should eliminate the need to subject fabric to the harsh cleaning methods of bleach; however, we know that every facility has its preferred cleaning practices. If the fiber type of your Crypton products are 100% solution-dyed polyester or acrylic, then bleach-cleaning is an option when required. Visit our Cleaning & Care page for further instruction, including acceptable fiber types.

Yes. Nanotex became a Crypton Company in January of 2014, and both now benefit from the shared technologies of Crypton and Nanotex, which in turn will gives both companies an additional edge in the marketplace. Nanotex now benefits from the master branding capabilities of Crypton, as well as many other valuable resources.

In the commercial market, Nanotex is designed primarily for spill protection. Almost any type of fiber can be treated.

The secret’s out! Beginning November 23, 2017, Crypton will be processing 100% of Nanotex’s contract finishing. For more information, visit our announcement page.

C-Zero is Crypton’s newest finish technology specially formulated for those looking for a fluorine-free solution for stain resistance on fabrics.

C-Zero is suitable for all fiber types, offering a full range of fabric options; however, natural fibers offer good repellency but are prone to stains.

No.

Yes. C-Zero is not resistant to oil-based stains, so it is really only recommended for select environments, such as offices and lobbies, where oil-based stains are not common.

No. Crypton’s fluorocarbon technologies still outperform C-Zero, but when there is a requirement for a fluorine-free treatment C-Zero is the best in its class.

C-Zero provides resistance to odor causing bacteria plus water-based stains using an innovative fluorine-free formula. It also offers an optional moisture barrier to further improve cleanability and durability.

C-Zero is applied using the same method with which our other finishes are applied. Fabric is brought from our partners’ mills to our Kings Mountain, NC plant in a greige (raw) state where it is immersed in our proprietary C-Zero formula. It is then run through a long oven where C-Zero permanently bonds with the fibers.

C-Zero passes Cal 117, UFAC, and NFPA 260.

Liquid spills are repelled for up to 10 minutes, making clean-up easy compared to untreated fabrics. It’s best to use a mild 1:10 soap-to-water mixture and non-abrasive scrubbing. Just like other fabrics, all soap residues must be washed from the surface to ensure the finish continues to perform.

Yes. Solvents can damage the finish, so solvent-based cleaners, including fabric softeners and dry cleaning, should be avoided.

Although we pursue environmentally-friendly measures for all of our fabric offerings, there is a Green Spectrum of sustainable products in which some products are more sustainable than others. Crypton Green is a bigger step along this spectrum because it ensures more sustainable fibers are used and that the most stringent emissions requirements are met.

With our initiative to use green technology on all Crypton fabrics, we are moving in the right direction in terms of sustainability. What sets Crypton Green apart in this category is the makeup of its fiber content. In order to be given the Crypton Green seal, fiber content must meet one of the following criteria: 50-100% recycled; 100% heavy-metal-free polyester; 100% wool with heavy-metal-free dyes; or 100% polypropylene. The end product must also meet Section 01350 emissions requirements and are MBDC Cradle to Cradle – Silver-certified.

While the selection of Crypton Green alone will not garner points, it may contribute to the following LEED-CI v.2.0 credits and their corresponding credits in the Green Guide for Health Care:

  • Credit MR 3.3, Resource Reuse – 30% Furniture and Furnishings (1 point)
  • Credits MR 4.1 and 4.2, Recycled Content (1 or 2 points)
  • Credit MR 5.2, Regional Materials – 10% Extracted and Manufactured Regionally (1 point)
  • Credit MR 6, Rapidly Renewable Materials (1 point)
  • Credit EQ 4.5, Low-Emitting Materials, Systems Furniture, and Seating (1 point)

It is also a fabric freshener and deodorizer on all fabrics and is a fresh, citrus-scented disinfectant on all other non-porous surfaces.

Crypton Disinfectant & Deodorizer is a registered, hospital grade disinfectant that works on all hard, inanimate surfaces just like any other quaternary disinfectant. The product may be used on other fabrics, too. It provides fabric freshening and deodorizing for all textiles.

These are commonly referred to as “quats,” since they are quaternary ammonium compounds. Our latest advancement in disinfectant cleaners has been developed using a new kind of quaternary ammonium chloride structure that offers excellent germicidal properties and excellent cleaning. They offer a tremendous range and versatility for use. Crypton Disinfectant & Deodorizer is easy to use and is effective against a wide range of bacteria, including MRSA and VRE. Crypton quaternary disinfectant is effective on Crypton integrated barrier fabrics.

Antimicrobial agents destroy or inhibit the growth or reproduction of bacteria, fungi, protozoa or viruses that cause disease. Antibacterial means any substance intended to destroy, eliminate, reduce, mitigate or control the growth or development of bacteria on surfaces. Antimicrobial and antibacterial products are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Crypton kills common household, kitchen, and bathroom germs and viruses on nonporous surfaces. Crypton Disinfectant & Deodorizer kills, E Coli, H1N1, Hepatitis B and C, Herpes Simplex 1 and 2, HIV, Influenza, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Salmonella, MRSA, VRE, Canine Distemper, mold, mildew, and many more.

The time it takes for bacterial and virucidal kills on Crypton Fabric varies just like on any non-porous surface. Be sure to follow instructions on bottle to disinfect.

After three years of testing, submitting results, and helping to establish new protocol test procedures, the EPA recognized Crypton Disinfectant & Deodorizer works to “disinfect Crypton barrier fabrics.” Crypton has proven that its integrated barrier system, used in conjunction with Crypton Disinfectant & Deodorizer, kills bacteria, viruses, mold, and mildew.

The EPA closely regulates germicidal product claims, particularly where the target germs cause human illness. Since all germ killers are considered pesticides, the EPA requires testing to certify manufacturers’ claims for safety and effectiveness. Crypton Disinfectant & Deodorizer is registered with the EPA.

Crypton’s “repel and release” stain fighting technology coupled with our hospital-grade Disinfectant & Deodorizer should eliminate the need to subject fabric to the harsh cleaning methods of bleach; however, we know that every facility has preferred cleaning practices. If the fiber type of your Crypton products are 100% solution-dyed polyester or acrylic, then bleach-cleaning is an option when required. Yes, Crypton’s Disinfectant & Deodorizer is effective in killing the SARS-CoV-2 – COVID-19 Virus. It is also effective against 99.9% germs and viruses.

These are commonly referred to as “quats,” and are quaternary ammonium compounds.

The time it takes for bacterial and virucidal kills on Crypton Fabric varies just like on any non-porous surface. Be sure to follow instructions on the bottle to disinfect. We recommend that treated surfaces remain wet for 10 minutes to ensure it is effective as possible.

Today, more than ever, disinfection is crucial to health and safety. Disinfectants are the only products approved by the EPA to kill viruses on hard surfaces. Sanitizers only have claims against bacteria. Disinfectants kill both bacteria and viruses. Crypton Fabric is the only fabric that can be disinfected.

Designed for commercial environments, INCASE is an advanced stain and odor-resistant treatment to be used when a barrier is not required. INCASE works at the molecular level to increase surface tension. The result is that liquids immediately roll away. Unlike other repellents, INCASE allows both oil- and water-based stains to easily release from the fabric when cleaned.

INCASE protection affords the same trusted excellence that our Crypton customers have relied on for more than 20 years. INCASE exceeds the capabilities of other products on the market because of its superior cleanability, stain resistance, and built-in Silver Ion microbial protection. INCASE is processed to order and formulated specifically for end-use and fiber type to ensure quality.

Fabrics are processed at our state-of-the-art facility in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, according to end-use, texture, and fiber type. We immerse the fabric so each fiber is protected, instead of using a surface treatment that can be abraded away.

Yes. Almost any kind of fabric can be treated with INCASE, including chenille, flat wovens, velour, cotton, wool, rayon, synthetics, etc.

INCASE performance lasts for the life of the product. It provides sustainable, durable performance achieved through a newly-developed molecular bond strength that will withstand repeated cleanings.

No. In fact, with cotton bedding, INCASE provides additional wrinkle resistance after washing, while still preserving all if its protection. INCASE also provides anti-static properties.

Yes. INCASE is designed to be FR-neutral, meaning it will not negatively impact inherently flame-retardant fabrics, including drapes and cubicle curtains. INCASEd fabrics can pass the NFPA 701 Vertical Flame Resistance Test for draperies and cubicles.

The combination of environmentally preferable chemistry and our sustainable production processes make INCASE the greenest stain-resistant formula in the world. There is no detectable PFOA or PFOS and no harmful VOC emissions. Plus, processes in our state-of-the-art facility use fewer natural resources, including gas and water. The INCASE treatment is powered by renewable energy and is carbon-neutral.

Silver Ion technology is used in INCASE to inhibit the growth of a broad spectrum of microorganisms, including bacteria. Silver is one of nature’s original antimicrobials. Used thousands of years ago by Greeks in vessels to preserve water and wine, the natural benefits of silver are now being used to keep fabrics odor-free.

No. Commercial recycling practices are not inhibited in any way.
